E-zine Advertising and Publishing

How to use the Internet's most powerful promotional tool to build a die-hard following of eager customers who bring you sales and profits week after week.

Maybe you've heard that success on the Internet is all about building communities. Yahoo is worth hundreds of millions because of their loyal following that advertisers love to reach. AOL sets sales records each year because of their massive 15 million subscribers. Although your business probably doesn't need to operate on this massive level, building your own community of loyal followers is one of the Net's greatest assets.

You can advertise with banners, participate in newsgroups, and send your sales letter to opt-in lists. None of these marketing methods have quite the power of publishing your own e-zine (email newsletter). An e-zine's ability to help you build a big Internet community is almost magical. Over and over again we hear from top Internet marketers that their newsletters are their main source of getting steady sales for their businesses.

What will your newsletter be about? There are e-zines on just about any topic imaginable. At last count there were about 10,000 e-zines being published with the vast majority having to do with small business. Even with all that variety, there are lots of topics that aren't covered. And just about everyone agrees there is always room for one more e-zine on a subject, no matter how crowded the field is.

Your e-zine should focus on a topic that most of your customers are interested in. If you business sells car parts, your e-zine could cover new developments in car parts, best places to get hard-to-find car parts, and so on. You might be able to interest even more prospective customers by focusing your e-zine on car maintenance from repairs to simple safety precautions. Just make sure you focus your newsletter on something. Catch-all e-zines don't seem to draw much interest (unless they are specifically geared to an audience that wants a grab bag of information.)

You will learn more about how to produce and edit your e- zine in Lesson #6 of this free course. We will also discuss ways to build your subscriber list and how to earn an income from featuring ads in your e-zine. How to send your newsletter to subscribers. Only send your newsletter to people who have asked for it. Sending to people you don't know is spamming and will get you in big trouble with your Internet service provider.

You can send your newsletter yourself. Many people use a free copy of Eudora Lite. Download it at http://www.eudora.com/. Be sure to put your subscriber addresses in the BCC field. This insures that subscribers can't see each other's email addresses, an important precaution that keeps your customers from getting lots of unwanted junk email.

While it is fairly simple to send out your own newsletter when you have a small list, you will soon want to switch to a professional list management service that does all the list and sending work for you. Two good free ones are http://www.listbot.com and http://www.onelist.com/. If your list is over 2,000, check into http://www.oaknetpub.com for excellent service and the lowest rates (tell Phil that DrNunley sent you).

Promoting your web site with ads in e-zines. E-zines are extremely cheap or free to produce. Publishers are able to pass their huge savings on to you in the form of much lower advertising rates. You can reach 270,000 subscribers for just $36 in demc.com's well known newsletter. AIM newsletter goes to over 40,000 web site owners for $40 (inetexchange.com).

Ads generally come in 3-line, 4-line, and 5-line lengths. Some newsletters ask that your ad be no longer than 50 words. Some allow up to 100 words. Search for e-zines that match your ad needs at http://ezinesearch.com Probably the most detailed and complete catalog of ezines that take ads can be found at Ruth Townsend's http://www.lifestylespub.com She charges a small annual fee, but the price is worth it if you place lots of e-zine ads.

Things you can do NOW: The best way to get ideas for your own e-zine is to subscribe to several. Copy the look and elements you like best. Find a good list of several hundred top e-zines (with links to their sites) at: http://www.site-city.com/members/e-zine-master

Don't wait to write your first issue all at once. The task may be too daunting. Instead, piece it together a little bit each day. Here's a secret. You can use Kate Schultz's nifty newsletter generating program at http://www.e-zinez.com/. Type your info into Kate's form and you get a professional looking newsletter complete with articles provided. Play around with it a bit to get an e-zine look you like.
